Scott LaFaro Bass Part Transcription
Scott LaFaro’s bass lines and solos fully transcribed on all 6 tracks from the 1958 Hampton Hawes album: For Real! On the Contemporary and OJC Record Labels
Scott LaFaro was all of 22 years old when he recorded this album alongside pianist/leader Hampton Hawes, Harold Land on tenor sax and Frank Butler on drums. Jazz fans were truly robbed of the next great bass virtuoso when Scotty died just 3 years later in car crash. His solos were creative and bluesy. Intricate and precise. The title track, For Real, is particular favorite of mine on this album. The formula stays fairly consistent throughout the record with a tenor, then piano, the bass, then trading solo for the most part. LaFaro’s lines are swinging and musical, albeit with the occasional intonation issues (nobody’s perfect). The last track, Cole Porter’s “I Love You” burns at about 320bpm and makes for a great exercise in endurance in locking in with the drummer as you play along with music.
